Welcome to the Woking Branch of the BCSS

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Cacti & Other Succulents! Cacti are a fascinating family of succulent plants only found in North and South America. Some grow more than 20m tall while others are less than a centimetre in diameter. Other succulents are found in arid regions right across the world and are a very diverse group encompassing many different plant families. What cacti and succulents have in common is that they have evolved to survive periods of drought, something which has resulted in forms and features that make them endlessly interesting. Many are economically important: some are edible or used to make drinks (think tequila!), others have medicinal properties, and a few have practical uses such as in making rope and furniture. Many cacti and succulents are easy to grow on a sunny south-facing windowsill but a greenhouse or conservatory is best if you pIan to build a collection.

Whatever you have available to you there’s always something that will flourish and bloom. The British Cactus & Succulent Society promotes the study, conservation, propagation and cultivation of cacti and other succulent plants. Our members have collections ranging from a few dozen to several thousand. No matter how many you have, if you are interested in learning about these plants why not join us at your local branch? Our monthly meetings are for beginners and expert collectors alike. We offer a varied programme of interesting talks and there’s plenty of friendly advice on hand.

Why not come along one evening for a free taster meeting, or get in touch with one of our committee members.
